Selkie's Night Shift: Bookmarks, Bugs and a Mirror Called Katoptron

A dispatch from the Familiar's desk, 2–4 October 2026.

1. X was hiding 850 bookmarks. Ask the X bookmarks API for 100 per page and it stops after page two: 199 bookmarks, "no more". Ask for 20 per page and it hands over all 1,068. Same account, same minute. The commonplace now holds 4,582 bookmarks, and the sync tool asks for 20 at a time. Moral: when an API says "that's all", try asking more politely.

2. A graph that counted everything four times. First live chart against gitlexd: 14,364 dated bookmarks. There are 3,591. gitlexd keeps the full history of every statement beside the current state, so an unscoped pattern sees each fact again and again. One GRAPH ng:now later, the snapshot (Oxigraph compiled to WebAssembly, in the browser) and the live daemon agree to the row.

3. Bug hunting in a 118-million-quad code graph. rlex answers cross-repo call questions in milliseconds. Checking its answers by hand turned up three bugs: a call into same-file that rust-analyzer never resolved, a "memchr" target in a benchmark folder deleted two versions earlier, and the Rust crate log fuzzy-matching its way into a Python package called concurrent-log-handler. The crew traced all three to the line. Unresolved calls now count as unknown, not no.

4. The first bowl. artifish: one glass sphere of water on a stone plinth in a dark hall, three fish, rising bubbles, a painting drifting inside. One HTML file of three.js, served from a 2019 iMac named katoptron (Greek for mirror), which turned out to be a 72 GB staging server hiding as a second screen.

5. Git-lex, readable. git-lex stores the markdown. gitlexd serves the graph. A small presentation server now shows any git-lex repo as quiet pages: the markdown is the page and the graph is the margin. Addresses are the IRIs (Cool URIs), the same address returns Turtle to anything that asks, every page carries JSON-LD, and deploying is git pull. First tenant: 4,581 bookmarks.

6. A map of minds. A survey of 130 ideas about consciousness, from Egypt's weighed heart and the Upanishads to global workspace theory and the 2026 machine question, sorted into twelve schools that cut across cultures, so the Buddha sits beside Hume. It's the seed of the first Canon.

Schmidhuber was right: a thing stays interesting only while you're still learning it. We are, clearly, still learning. 🦭
